Pirate Ship under flash

Had a bit of spare time to play and decided to get a bit more experience at using the off camera flash. The subject of my attention being my son's pirate ship. I tried a few different lighting combinations like bring the flash through the back to light up the sails and over head before going for a side view to get an even rather than moody look.

I tried with a light modifier to soften the light but that just didn't give enough shade to emphasis the form. The resulting shot was taken with flash on 1/4 power to the right side with a large white card to the left to fill in the shadows on the left side.
